A R T I S T
Justin Lorenzen is a professional painter and fine artist. His work is mysterious but shows allurement through strength, hope, and acceptance of transition. His main subjects of focus are mythology, horror, and science fiction. He predominantly illustrates fantastical imagery that relates to current issues through a single-frame or multiple-frame narrative.
Justin grew up in Iowa and holds a BFA in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking from the College of Art & Design at Iowa State University. After college he worked as an Art Director designing and painting scenic backdrops and props in Austin, TX. His love of large-scale work grew into planning and painting many private and public murals in the Midwest, South, and Mid-Atlantic U.S. At present Justin lives in Pennsylvania as a freelance artist. He has shown his art in multiple regional and national art competitions, and his paintings and prints are owned in the United States and Europe.
His style is narrative expressionism. "I have always been inspired by the German Expressionists and Symbolism. I love to use a slight forced perspective and distortion in much of my work, to help express an uneasy or dramatic feeling." Justin mainly works in oil paint, ink, pastel, and relief printmaking. The colors are earth tones blended or used with a wash and he leans toward using only black and white in his printmaking and ink wash painting.
Justin is currently developing his second printmaking series of "Dr. Frank Electrostein". It is a collection consisting of nineteen linoleum cut hand-pressed limited edition prints. In 2023 Justin has self-published his graphic novel "The Chronicles of Dr. Frank Electrostein". He is also in the process of creating a second graphic novel in the series titled "Rebuilt".
"I look into the darkness, but find light and beauty from within. My ambition is to illuminate dreams and beliefs through inspirational and thought-provoking imagery. I hope my work helps express cultural and social truths through change and transformation. Sometimes you must accept a small portion of the dark in order to have a glimmer of a brighter tomorrow."
